In Türkiye, licences of classes M, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE, F and G are valid for 10 years and classes C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE for 5 years (Road Traffic Regulation, Article 87). Driving on an expired licence brings an administrative fine and the licence is withdrawn (Law, Article 39).

Under Türkiye's Road Traffic Law, driving licences are issued for a limited period; validity periods and renewal conditions are set by regulation (Article 39). Under the Road Traffic Regulation, licences of classes M, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE, F and G are valid for 10 years, and licences of classes C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE for 5 years (Article 87).

To renew, the holder applies to any traffic registration office or a Turkish mission abroad. The applicant must meet the health requirements of the Regulation on Health Requirements and Examinations of Drivers and the conviction-related conditions in Article 76 of the Road Traffic Regulation and, if the licence was temporarily withdrawn, the conditions for its return. No fee (harç) is charged for a licence renewed this way (Article 87).

The old licence is taken in at renewal; a temporary document replacing the licence, valid for 15 days, may be issued so the holder can drive until the new licence is delivered (Road Traffic Regulation, Article 87).

Who is responsible?

The licence holder. The driver applies for renewal (Road Traffic Regulation, Article 87), carries the licence while driving and shows it on request, and reports a change of residential address to the issuing registration office within 30 days (Article 89).

If the deadline passes

A driver who drives with an expired licence is subject to an administrative fine and the licence is withdrawn (Road Traffic Law, Article 39).

Groups for the medical examination

For medical examinations, licence classes are split into two groups: group one is M, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE and F; group two is C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE and G (Health Requirements Regulation, Article 4(6)). Examinations are carried out by doctors at Ministry of Health and university health facilities, family health centres and licensed private health institutions other than private practices, who issue a health report (Article 4(1)). Some conditions require more frequent checks; for example, drivers with diabetes as defined in the regulation may be licensed subject to examination at intervals of at most five years in group one and at most three years in group two (Article 6(1)(b)).
