Don't let your truck and bus drivers' licences expire
In Türkiye class C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE driving licences are valid for 5 years, while the other classes run 10 years (Road Traffic Regulation, Article 87). To renew, the driver applies to any traffic registration office and must meet the health requirements; no fee is charged for the renewed licence.
Under Türkiye's Road Traffic Law, driving licences are issued for a limited period; validity periods and renewal conditions are set by regulation (Law No. 2918, Article 39). Under the Road Traffic Regulation, licences of classes C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE are valid for 5 years, while classes M, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE, F and G are valid for 10 years (Article 87). Heavy goods and passenger classes are therefore renewed twice as often as the car licence.
Classes: C1 covers trucks and tractor units with a maximum laden weight over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg; C covers trucks and tractor units; CE covers C-class vehicles with a trailer or semi-trailer over 750 kg; D1 covers minibuses; D covers minibuses and buses; DE covers D-class vehicles with a trailer over 750 kg (Article 75). A class C or D licence also allows driving class M, B, B1 and F vehicles (Article 85).
To renew, the holder applies to any traffic registration office or a Turkish mission abroad. The applicant must meet the health requirements of the Regulation on Health Requirements and Examinations of Drivers and the conviction-related conditions in Article 76 of the Road Traffic Regulation and, if the licence was temporarily withdrawn, the conditions for its return. No fee (harç) is charged for a licence renewed this way (Article 87).

Who is responsible?
The licence holder. The driver applies for renewal (Road Traffic Regulation, Article 87), carries the licence while driving and shows it on request, and reports a change of residential address to the issuing registration office within 30 days (Article 89; Law No. 2918, Article 44). If a driver shows an obvious health change that prevents driving, traffic officers temporarily withdraw the licence and require a "fit to drive" health report; the licence is not returned until the health requirements are met (Regulation, Article 90; Law, Article 45).
If the deadline passes
A driver who drives with an expired licence is subject to an administrative fine and the licence is withdrawn (Road Traffic Law No. 2918, Article 39). Driving vehicles outside the classes the licence covers is also prohibited; the vehicle owner who lets such a person drive is fined as well, via the registration plate (Article 39). The old licence is taken in at renewal; a temporary document replacing the licence, valid for 15 days, may be issued so the holder can drive until the new licence is delivered (Regulation, Article 87).
A health requirement every 5 years
Class C and D licences are renewed every 5 years, and each renewal requires meeting the health requirements of the Regulation on Health Requirements and Examinations of Drivers (Road Traffic Regulation, Article 87(a)). For a fleet this means every driver has to plan the medical examination and the application before the expiry date on the licence. A class C licence also allows towing a light trailer of up to 750 kg (Article 86).
