Don't miss your vehicles' motor liability insurance expiry dates

Compulsory motor liability insurance in Türkiye runs for one year, and the vehicle's operator must take out a separate policy for each vehicle (Tariff Regulation, Articles 13(1) and 5(5)). A vehicle without valid insurance is taken off the road, and the Law also provides for a fine (Road Traffic Law, Article 91).

Under Türkiye's Road Traffic Law No. 2918, vehicle operators must take out liability insurance to cover their liability under Article 85(1) of the Law. Vehicles without compulsory liability insurance at the applicable cover amounts are taken off the road (Law, Article 91).

Under the Regulation on Tariff Application Principles for Compulsory Motor Liability Insurance, the insurance term is one year; short-term insurance is possible only in the cases the regulation lists (Article 13(1)). Under the General Conditions, cover starts and ends on the start and end days and at the times written in the policy; if no time is written, it starts and ends at 12:00 noon Türkiye time (A.7).

The regulation limits short-term insurance to the cases it lists: vehicles with temporary plates, international carriers subject to Law No. 4925, and foreign-plated vehicles covered by international agreements that have no insurance valid in Türkiye. The Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency may reduce the term to as little as thirty days for contracts of used-vehicle dealers holding an authorisation certificate (Tariff Regulation, Article 13(1)).

Who is responsible?

The vehicle's operator (Law, Article 91). If the operator of an insured vehicle changes, the transferring party notifies the insurer within 15 days (Law, Article 94).

If the deadline passes

A vehicle without valid compulsory liability insurance is taken off the road; the Law also provides for a fine for those who breach this rule (Law, Article 91).

The no-claims step follows the operator, not the vehicle

If no claim is paid for the operator during the insurance term, the premium discount in the next contract is set one step higher; for each claim paid, the premium increase is set one step lower. This follows the operator (Tariff Regulation, Article 5(3) and 5(4)).
