Don't miss your vehicles' exhaust emission test dates
In Türkiye private and official cars need an exhaust emission test at the end of their third year and then every two years; other motor vehicles at the end of their first year and then yearly (Exhaust Gas Emission Control Regulation, Article 6(2)). The owner is responsible; a change of owner does not affect validity.
Under Türkiye's Exhaust Gas Emission Control Regulation, motor vehicle owners must have their vehicles' exhaust emissions measured at the set intervals and keep emissions within the limits of the TS 13231 standard (Article 6(1)). Measurements are carried out by authorised exhaust emission measurement stations (Article 5(1)).
Private and official cars are measured at the end of their third year and then every two years; other motor vehicles at the end of their first year and then every year. The first measurement date is based on the first inspection validity date in the vehicle registration records (Article 6(2)).
At a glance
| Vehicle | First test | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Private and official cars | At 3 years old | Every 2 years |
| Other motor vehicles | At 1 year old | Every year |
Construction machinery, tractors, motorcycles and mopeds, electric and hybrid electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, unregistered special-use vehicles at airports and diesel vehicles of model year 1979 or earlier are exempt (Article 7(1)).
Who is responsible?
The vehicle owner (Articles 6(1) and 13(1)). A change of owner does not change the validity of the measurement (Article 6(4)).
If the deadline passes
At inspections, a report is drawn up for vehicles without a valid measurement and the owner is given an administrative fine under Environmental Law No. 2872 (Article 13(7)). If a vehicle fails the measurement, it must be repaired and serviced; a one-time period of seven days is given to repeat the measurement, and from the end of that period the vehicle may not be used on public roads until it passes (Article 8(5)).
When must the test be repeated early?
The measurement is renewed if a modification affecting exhaust emissions is made (engine, chassis or fuel system) or if the authorised police require a vehicle inspection after an accident (Article 6(5)). The owner may also have it renewed voluntarily; the latest measurement then applies (Article 6(6)). If the plate changes, the owner applies to the provincial directorate with copies of the new registration certificate and ID, or the measurement is renewed (Article 6(4)).
