Don't miss your employees' periodic health examinations

Periodic health examinations that employers in Türkiye must arrange (Law No. 6331, Article 15(1)(b)) are repeated at least every 5 years in low-hazard, 3 in hazardous and 1 in very hazardous work, and every 6 months for child, young and pregnant workers (Workplace Doctor Regulation, Article 9(2)(c)(3)).

Under Türkiye's Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, the employer must ensure employees undergo health examinations when they start work, when they change jobs, on return to work after a work accident, occupational disease or repeated sick leave if they request it, and at regular intervals set by the Ministry according to the workplace's hazard class while the work continues (Article 15(1)(b)).

The intervals are set in the Regulation on the Duties, Powers, Responsibilities and Training of Workplace Doctors and Other Health Personnel: at least every five years for work in the low-hazard class, every three years in the hazardous class and every year in the very hazardous class; at least every six months for child, young and pregnant workers. The workplace doctor shortens these intervals where needed (Article 9(2)(c)(3)).

Work in the very hazardous classEvery year
Work in the hazardous classEvery 3 years
Work in the low-hazard classEvery 5 years
Child, young and pregnant workersEvery 6 months

The intervals are applied with priority given to the employee's personal characteristics, the workplace's hazard class and the nature of the work, in line with international standards and risk assessment results; the workplace doctor shortens them where needed (Regulation, Article 9(2)(c)(3)).

Who is responsible?

The employer ensures the examinations are carried out and bears the cost of health surveillance, which may not be passed on to employees (Law, Articles 15(1) and 15(4)). Health reports are obtained from the workplace doctor; in low-hazard workplaces with fewer than 50 employees they may also be obtained from ÇASMER centres, family doctors or other public health providers (Law, Article 15(3)). The workplace doctor records the results in line with the template in Annex 2 of the regulation and keeps them at the workplace (Regulation, Article 9(2)(c)(4)).

If the deadline passes

The employer is subject to a separate administrative fine for each employee not placed under health surveillance or without a health report (Law No. 6331, Article 26(1)(f)).

Pre-employment report

People who will work in jobs in the hazardous and very hazardous classes may not start work without a health report stating they are fit for the job (Law, Article 15(2)). Recording the date of the pre-employment exam makes it easier to set the next periodic exam date.

Tracking it with ExpirySuite

  1. Add each employee as a person, upload the health report as a file and enter the next periodic exam date for their hazard class as the expiry date.
  2. Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before expiry and on the expiry day; plan exam appointments around them.
  3. On the Business plan, a requirement rule can make the same document mandatory for several employees, so missing ones show up in the list.
  4. Assign the workplace doctor or HR lead as the document owner; overdue records are also reported to managers on days 3, 7 and 14.
