Don't miss the periodic inspection of your lightning protection system
In Türkiye lightning protection installations must be inspected at least once a year to the TS EN 62305 series by authorised electrical engineers, technical teachers or technicians unless a standard says otherwise (Work Equipment Regulation, Annex III, Table 3). The project is required; the employer arranges it.
Under Türkiye's Regulation on Health and Safety Requirements in the Use of Work Equipment, the equipment and installations listed in the Annex III tables are subject to periodic inspection, carried out by persons authorised to perform periodic inspections (Article 7(1)). Lightning protection installations (mesh systems, air-termination rods, natural air-termination components, lightning rods and similar) are listed in Annex III, Table 3, with a maximum interval of one year where the standards set no interval.
The inspection follows the criteria of the TS EN 62305 standard series. The installation project is required at the inspection and the installation is assessed for conformity with it (Annex III, 2.3.7 and Table 3).
At a glance
| Maximum interval | 1 year where the standards set no interval (Annex III, 2.3.1 and Table 3) |
|---|---|
| Inspection criteria | TS EN 62305 standard series (Table 3) |
| Who inspects | Authorised electrical engineers, electrical-electronic engineers, technical teachers who graduated in electrical education, and electrical technicians or senior technicians (Annex III, 2.3.2) |
| Project | The installation project is required; the employer must have one drawn up for installations without a project (Annex III, 2.3.7) |
| Contract | A contract following the İSG-KATİP template is drawn up and mutually approved at least 1 day before the inspection (Article 7(6)) |
| Report | Shows the inspector's EKİPNET registration number and the start date of the next periodic inspection (Article 7(5); Annex III, 1.7.1) |
Electrical and earthing installations are a separate row in the same Table 3; track that inspection as a separate record.
Who is responsible?
The employer. It ensures the inspection is done by authorised persons, records the results with a wet signature or a secure electronic signature, and keeps them to show the authorities on request (Article 7(2)(b) and 7(2)(c)). It makes or arranges the preparations specified by the inspector (Article 7(4)). Periodic inspection reports are kept for as long as the equipment is in use (Annex III, 1.6).
If the deadline passes
If the report finds non-conformities and states that the installation should not be used until they are fixed, it is not used until then, and the employer marks it with a clearly visible warning (Annex III, 1.9). Minor defects must be fixed by the start date of the next periodic inspection, otherwise they count as major defects (Annex III, 1.9.1). An employer that fails to meet obligations in regulations based on Article 30 of Law No. 6331 is subject to a monthly administrative fine for each provision not complied with (Law, Article 26(1)(n)).
What else is required for buildings?
Under the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire, the relevant regulations and standards must be complied with to protect buildings against lightning; an adequate connection must allow the electrical charge to be conducted to earth without creating a risk to the structure or other installations in it, and an earth-termination network must be created (Article 64(1)).
