Don't miss the periodic inspection of your machine tools and presses
In Türkiye presses, lathes, milling machines, saws, grinders, drills and guillotines in Annex III, Table 4 must be inspected at least once a year by authorised persons unless a standard says otherwise (Work Equipment Regulation, Article 7(1)). For other machines the manufacturer's interval or a risk assessment applies.
Under Türkiye's Regulation on Health and Safety Requirements in the Use of Work Equipment, the equipment listed in the Annex III tables is subject to periodic inspection, carried out by persons authorised to perform periodic inspections (Article 7(1)). Inspection intervals and criteria for a number of machine tools are listed in Annex III, Table 4: for each machine in the table the maximum interval is 1 year where the standards set no interval, without prejudice to intervals set by the relevant standard.
Equipment covered by an equipment group but with no matching standard in the table is inspected following the order in Annex III, 1.1 and 1.4: where neither the table nor a standard sets the interval and criteria, the manufacturer's interval applies, otherwise a risk assessment. Where the standards set no interval, inspections may not be less frequent than the maximum intervals in the tables (Article 7(1); Annex III, 1.4).

Inspections are carried out by authorised mechanical, mechatronics, metallurgical and materials, and manufacturing engineers, technical teachers who graduated in mechanical or metal education, and mechanical technicians or senior technicians (Annex III, 2.4.1). A contract following the İSG-KATİP template is drawn up and mutually approved at least 1 day before the inspection (Article 7(6)).
Who is responsible?
The employer. It ensures periodic inspections are done by authorised persons, records the results with a wet signature or a secure electronic signature, and keeps them to show the authorities on request (Article 7(2)(b) and 7(2)(c)). It makes or arranges the preparations specified by the inspector (Article 7(4)). Periodic inspection reports are kept for as long as the equipment is in use (Annex III, 1.6).
If the deadline passes
If the report finds non-conformities and states that the equipment should not be used until they are fixed, it is not used until then, and the employer marks it with a clearly visible warning (Annex III, 1.9). Minor defects must be fixed by the start date of the next periodic inspection, otherwise they count as major defects (Annex III, 1.9.1). An employer that fails to meet obligations in regulations based on Article 30 of Law No. 6331 is subject to a monthly administrative fine for each provision not complied with (Law, Article 26(1)(n)).
When is an inspection needed besides the yearly one?
A periodic inspection is also carried out after installation and before first use where safety depends on installation conditions, after major maintenance and repair, and for non-mobile equipment each time it is moved (Article 7(2)(a)). Inspections are also required after events that may impair safety, such as changes in working methods, accidents, natural events or long periods out of use (Article 7(2)(b)). Equipment built to do more than one job is inspected separately for each job it does (Annex III, 1.5).
Tracking it with ExpirySuite
- Add each item of equipment as a separate asset, upload the periodic inspection report as a file and enter the next inspection start date shown in the report as the expiry date.
- Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before expiry and on the expiry day, so you can plan the İSG-KATİP contract and the inspection day around them.
- Assign the person who organises the inspection as the document owner; overdue records are also reported to managers on days 3, 7 and 14.
- You can request the report from the inspector or inspection company through a secure link valid for 14 days, without them needing an account.
Frequently asked questions
- How often must a press or lathe be inspected in Türkiye?
- At least once a year where the relevant standards set no interval (Work Equipment Regulation, Annex III, Table 4).
- What about machines not named in Table 4?
- The regulation lists intervals for only some machine tools in Table 4 (Annex III, 2.4.1). Equipment covered by an equipment group but with no matching standard in the table is inspected following the order in Annex III, 1.1 and 1.4 (Article 7(1)). If equipment that is not mandatory to inspect because it is not in Annex III is inspected anyway, the form and contract requirements do not apply to the report (Article 7(6)). Check which case applies to your machine with the authorised inspector.
- Who may carry out the inspection?
- Authorised persons registered through EKİPNET: mechanical, mechatronics, metallurgical and materials, and manufacturing engineers; technical teachers who graduated in mechanical or metal education; and mechanical technicians or senior technicians (Article 13 and Annex III, 2.4.1).
- Can inspections be more frequent based on a risk assessment?
- Yes. The frequency of tests and examinations may be increased based on a risk assessment that considers factors such as the environment, frequency of use, age, maintenance, accidents and previous inspection results (Annex III, 1.10).
