Don't miss the inspection of your fire suppression and detection systems
In Türkiye fire suppression systems such as sprinklers, hose reels, hydrants and pumps, and fire detection and alarm systems, must be inspected at least once a year unless a standard says otherwise (Work Equipment Regulation, Annex III, Table 3). The project is required; the employer or building owner arranges it.
Under Türkiye's Regulation on Health and Safety Requirements in the Use of Work Equipment, the equipment and installations listed in the Annex III tables are subject to periodic inspection by persons authorised to perform periodic inspections (Article 7(1)). Annex III, Table 3 lists fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and escape route pressurisation and smoke extraction systems, each with a maximum interval of one year where the standards set no interval.
For mechanical fire installations and fire detection and alarm systems, the installation project is required at the inspection, and conformity with the project, the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire and the relevant standards is assessed (Annex III, 2.3.5). The Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire also requires these systems to undergo the periodic inspection, testing and maintenance set out in the relevant standards (Articles 84(1) and 100(1)).

| System (Table 3) | Maximum interval | Inspection criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Fire suppression systems: automatic sprinklers, automatic gas suppression, kitchen hood suppression; fire water tank, fire pump room and pump performance tests, standpipes, fire hose reels, hydrants and similar | 1 year where standards set no interval | Criteria in the project and the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire |
| Fire detection and alarm systems | 1 year where standards set no interval | Criteria in the project and TSE CEN/TS 54-14 |
| Escape route pressurisation and smoke extraction systems | 1 year where standards set no interval | Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire |
Portable fire extinguishers are also listed in Table 3; see our separate fire extinguisher inspection guide for them.
Who is responsible?
In the workplace, the employer: it ensures the inspection is done by authorised persons and records and keeps the results with a wet signature or a secure electronic signature (Work Equipment Regulation, Article 7(2)(b) and 7(2)(c)). It must have a project drawn up, in line with the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire and the relevant standards, for installations without one (Annex III, 2.3.5). For buildings, the inspection, testing and maintenance of systems that require it are arranged by the building owner, the manager, or the building official to whom they have transferred this responsibility in writing (Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire, Articles 67(3) and 90(5)).
If the deadline passes
If the report finds non-conformities and states that the installation should not be used until they are fixed, it is not used until then, and the employer marks it with a clearly visible warning (Annex III, 1.9). Minor defects must be fixed by the start date of the next periodic inspection, otherwise they count as major defects (Annex III, 1.9.1). An employer that fails to meet obligations in regulations based on Article 30 of Law No. 6331 is subject to a monthly administrative fine for each provision not complied with (Law, Article 26(1)(n)).
Who carries out the inspection?
Periodic inspections of non-electrical installations such as fire suppression systems are carried out by authorised mechanical engineers, metallurgical and materials engineers, mechatronics engineers, manufacturing engineers, technical teachers who graduated in machinery and metal education, and mechanical technicians or senior technicians (Annex III, 2.3.3). Fire detection and alarm systems may be inspected by the titles listed for electrical installations and also by authorised electronic engineers (Annex III, 2.3.2).
Tracking it with ExpirySuite
- Add each system (sprinklers, fire hose reels and hydrants, gas suppression, detection and alarm, smoke extraction) as a separate asset, upload the inspection report and enter the next inspection start date shown in the report as the expiry date.
- Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before expiry and on the expiry day, so you can plan the İSG-KATİP contract and the inspection day around them.
- Assign the person who organises the inspection as the document owner; overdue records are also reported to managers on days 3, 7 and 14.
- You can request the report from the inspector or inspection company through a secure link valid for 14 days, without them needing an account.
