Don't miss the periodic inspection of your pressure vessels
In Türkiye steam, hot water, heating and thermal oil boilers, compressor air tanks, closed expansion tanks and water heaters must be inspected at least once a year unless a standard says otherwise (Work Equipment Regulation, Annex III, Table 1). A hydrostatic test is also required; the employer arranges the inspection.
Under Türkiye's Regulation on Health and Safety Requirements in the Use of Work Equipment, pressure vessels and installations are inspected according to Annex III, Table 1. For steam, hot water, heating and thermal oil boilers, compressed air and gas tanks (including mobile or fixed compressor air tanks), closed expansion tanks, and water heaters and storage tanks, the maximum interval is one year where the standards set no interval (Annex III, 2.1.1 and Table 1).
Unless the standards say otherwise, every periodic inspection includes an examination. A hydrostatic test is also carried out at most once a year at operating pressure (or at maximum pressure if no operating pressure is set), and at most every three years or after any major maintenance or repair at the test pressure in the manufacturing standard (or 1.5 times the maximum pressure if the standard sets none) (Annex III, 2.1.1).
At a glance
| Equipment | Maximum interval (if the standard sets none) |
|---|---|
| Steam and hot water boilers; heating boilers; thermal oil boilers | 1 year |
| Compressed air and gas tanks (including compressor air tanks) | 1 year |
| Closed expansion tanks; water heaters and storage tanks | 1 year |
| Steam cooking boilers; autoclaves; dyeing machines (boilers) | 1 year |
| Hazardous liquid storage tanks (atmospheric, cylindrical, prismatic, etc.) | 1 year; 10 years for vertical cylindrical welded above-ground tanks inspected under API standards |
| LPG and similar liquefied gas tanks | At the interval in the employer's written plan (examination only); reassessment at the end of 10 years |
| Cryogenic tanks | At the intervals set in TS EN ISO 21009-2 and TS EN 14197-3 |
The intervals in Table 1 are maximums, without prejudice to intervals set by the relevant standard. For equipment whose standards include safety valve tests (such as LPG tanks, steam boilers, hot water boilers and cryogenic tanks), safety valves are tested within the maximum intervals in the standards (Table 1, note 1).
Who is responsible?
The employer. It signs the contract following the İSG-KATİP template at least 1 day before the inspection (Article 7(6)) and keeps the results with a wet signature or secure electronic signature (Article 7(2)(c)). The inspection is done by authorised mechanical, metallurgical and materials, mechatronics, chemical, manufacturing and aeronautical engineers, technical teachers who graduated in mechanical or metal education, or mechanical technicians or senior technicians (Annex III, 2.1.6). For LPG tanks, the "written plan" is the document the employer prepares for periodic inspections under the relevant standards (Table 1, note 4).
If the deadline passes
Equipment the report declares unfit for use is not used until the non-conformities are fixed, and the employer marks it with a clearly visible warning (Annex III, 1.9). Vessels used below their maximum pressure are marked so the operating pressure is visible; if a pressure above the operating pressure is to be applied, the vessel may not be used until tested for that pressure (Annex III, 2.1.4). An employer that fails to meet obligations in regulations based on Article 30 of Law No. 6331 is subject to a monthly administrative fine for each provision not complied with (Law, Article 26(1)(n)).
Inspection bodies for LPG tanks and steam boilers
Periodic inspections of LPG tanks and installations (underground and above ground) are carried out by authorised persons working for equipment inspection bodies. The amendment of 23.12.2025 added steam boilers to this list; that rule does not apply until 01.01.2027, and reports duly issued before then remain valid for their term (Additional Article 2(1)(b) and (e); Provisional Article 6(2)). Until the Ministry issues new rules, inspection bodies accredited by TÜRKAK under TS EN ISO/IEC 17020 are accepted as equipment inspection bodies (Provisional Article 6(1)).
Tracking it with ExpirySuite
- Add each installation or item of equipment as a separate asset, upload the periodic inspection report as a file and enter the next inspection start date shown in the report as the expiry date.
- Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before expiry and on the expiry day, so you can plan the İSG-KATİP contract and the inspection day around them.
- Assign the person who organises the inspection as the document owner; overdue records are also reported to managers on days 3, 7 and 14.
- You can request the report from the inspector or inspection company through a secure link valid for 14 days, without them needing an account.
Frequently asked questions
- How often must a compressor air tank be inspected in Türkiye?
- Compressed air and gas tanks, including mobile or fixed compressor air tanks, are inspected at least once a year where the standards set no interval (Annex III, Table 1 and note 2).
- Is a hydrostatic test needed every year?
- Unless the standards say otherwise, at most once a year at operating pressure (or maximum pressure if none is set) at each periodic inspection; and at most every three years or after major maintenance or repair at the manufacturing standard's test pressure, or 1.5 times the maximum pressure if the standard sets none (Annex III, 2.1.1).
- What if a hydrostatic test is not possible?
- Where it cannot be done because of the equipment's nature and process constraints, the non-destructive testing methods given as an alternative in the standard or the manufacturer's manual may be used, with the reason stated in the report. Not being able to stop the equipment or process is not a valid reason, and the maximum intervals still apply (Annex III, 2.1.3).
- Who inspects LPG tanks?
- Authorised persons working for equipment inspection bodies (Additional Article 2(1)(b)).
