Don't miss the five-year endorsement of OHS certificates

In Türkiye OHS specialist and workplace physician certificates are endorsed (vize) every five years (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 20(1); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 27(1)). Without an application before the endorsement date the certificate is suspended; applicants finish within 60 days.

Employers in Türkiye may appoint as occupational safety specialist (iş güvenliği uzmanı) and workplace physician (işyeri hekimi) only people who hold a valid certificate (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 7(1); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 7(1)). Both regulations require the authorisation certificates of the persons and institutions they cover to be endorsed (vize) every five years (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 20(1); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 27(1)).

For persons certified after passing the exams under these regulations, the certificate of anyone who has not applied to the Ministry before the endorsement date is suspended until the endorsement is completed. Those who apply must complete the endorsement within 60 days of the endorsement date (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 20(7); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 27(7)).

Who is responsible?

The certificate holder applies for the endorsement. The employer is responsible for ensuring that the OHS specialist and workplace physician it appoints hold a valid certificate (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 7(1); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 7(1)).

If the deadline passes

The certificate of a person who has not applied before the endorsement date is suspended until the endorsement is completed (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 20(7); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 27(7)). An employer that does not appoint an OHS specialist or workplace physician with the qualifications required under Article 6(1) of Law No. 6331 is subject to an administrative fine for each month the breach continues (Law, Article 26(1)(b)).

A separate deadline for training institutions

Authorised training institutions apply to the Directorate General for endorsement when at most 60 days remain until the five years are completed; the training programmes of institutions that do not apply in time are not approved until the endorsement is completed, and if the endorsement is not completed within three months of the end of the period the authorisation is cancelled (OHS Specialists Regulation, Article 20(2); Workplace Physicians Regulation, Article 27(2)).
