Keep your site's lighting measurement from running out

Anyone in Argentina required to measure workplace lighting under Law 19.587 must use the mandatory protocol of the Occupational Risks Superintendency (SRT), and the values recorded in it are valid for twelve months (SRT Resolution 84/2012, Articles 1 and 2). A calibration certificate and a sketch are attached.

The Superintendency of Occupational Risks (SRT) approved the Protocol for measuring lighting in the workplace, mandatory for everyone who must measure lighting levels under Law 19.587 on Occupational Health and Safety and its implementing rules (SRT Resolution 84/2012, Article 1). The lighting measurement values recorded in that protocol are valid for twelve months (Article 2).

According to the resolution's recitals, the standardised protocol aims at reliable, clear and easy-to-read measurements and makes it possible, when values do not meet the rules, to issue recommendations and develop an action plan to bring the workplace into compliance. The SRT publishes a practical guide for carrying out the measurement (Article 3).

The protocol identifies the site and its tax ID (CUIT), the working hours or shifts so that the measurement is representative, the instrument with make, model and serial number, its last calibration date, the method, the measurement date and times and the weather conditions, including cloud cover; a copy of the calibration certificate and a plan or sketch of the measured points are attached (Annex, points 1 to 17). For each point it records the sector, workstation, type of lighting (natural, artificial or mixed), light source, lighting system, uniformity (E minimum ≥ E average/2), the measured value in lux and the value required by current law, with conclusions and recommendations (points 24 to 41).

A national rule issued under Laws 19.587 and 24.557. It was published in the Official Gazette of 30 January 2012 and entered into force thirty working days after the day following publication (Art. 5). The SRT's Prevention Department may amend or update the Annex (Art. 4). The official list of amending rules shows no repeal.

Who is responsible?

Employers, workers and Occupational Risk Insurers (ART) must adopt the legally required measures to prevent occupational risks and comply with health and safety rules (Law 24.557, Art. 4, cited in the recitals of SRT Resolution 84/2012). The protocol is completed by whoever carries out the measurement, with the instrument and calibration details, and identifies the site by company name and CUIT (Annex, points 1 to 9).

If the deadline passes

After twelve months the measurement values are no longer valid (SRT Resolution 84/2012, Art. 2) and the site needs a new measurement under the protocol. The resolution sets no penalty of its own: breaches fall under the general occupational health and safety regime, which is not reproduced on this page. If the current measurement showed values below those required, the protocol's recommendations (Annex, point 41) should be followed.

Daylight: record when you measured

The protocol asks for the working hours or shifts, the time of each point and the weather conditions, including cloud cover (Annex, points 7, 14 and 24), because daylight changes through the day. For the expiry date, what counts is the measurement date (point 11) plus the twelve months of Article 2.

Tracking it with ExpirySuite

  1. Add each site or workplace and record the measurement date plus twelve months as its expiry; if you have several SRT protocols, create one record for each.
  2. Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before expiry and on the expiry day, leaving time to book the professional and a calibrated light meter.
  3. The technician or your health and safety service can upload the signed protocol, the plan and the calibration certificate through a secure link that is valid for 14 days and needs no account.
  4. Assign a responsible person, such as the health and safety officer; if a measurement expires, managers get further reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.
