Never let a driver's professional licence expire unnoticed

Argentina's driving licence is issued for up to five years and a medical fitness exam must be passed at each renewal (Law 24.449, Article 13(c)). Professional drivers with classes C, D and E must prove fitness every two years from age 65 and every year from age 70 (Decree 779/95, Annex 1, Article 13).

Holders of class C, D and E licences are professional drivers; to obtain one they must have held a class B licence for at least a year (Article 20 of Argentina's Traffic Act 24.449). Class C covers lorries without a trailer, class D passenger transport, emergency and security vehicles, and class E articulated lorries or lorries with a trailer and non-agricultural special machinery (Article 16).

The Act allows licences to be issued for up to five years, and each renewal requires passing a medical fitness (psychophysical) examination (Article 13(c)). Under the regulations, people aged 21 to 65 are licensed for the maximum the Act allows; to renew, the holder presents a certificate of medical fitness issued by doctors or health centres registered with the National Road Safety Agency (Decree 779/95, Annex 1, Article 13(c.2)).

From age 65 the validity is shorter: to keep classes C, D and E, the holder must confirm medical fitness every two years and pass any tests the authority requires; from age 70 the check is yearly (Annex 1, Article 13(e.2) and (e.3)). A professional licence cannot be issued for the first time to anyone over 65 (Article 20 of the Act).

Who is responsible?

The driver renews the licence and presents the medical fitness certificate (Annex 1, Article 13(c.2) and (e)). Licences are issued by municipalities or provincial bodies authorised by the National Road Safety Agency (Act 24.449, Article 13(a)); authorised bodies that meet the content set by the Agency may issue class C, D and E licences valid nationwide (Annex 1, Article 14).

If the deadline passes

Enforcement officers must retain expired licences (Act 24.449, Article 72(b)(1)). Driving without being properly licensed and lacking required documents are serious offences (Article 77(d) and (e)).

Record of serious offences

If the holder has a record of serious traffic offences, renewal also requires passing the theory and practical test (Act 24.449, Article 13(c); Annex 1, Article 13(c.2)). For class D the applicant's criminal record is checked (Article 20 of the Act).

Frequently asked questions

How long is a professional licence valid?
The Act allows up to five years, with a medical fitness exam at each renewal (Act 24.449, Article 13(c)). From 65, classes C, D and E need a fitness check every two years, and from 70 every year (Decree 779/95, Annex 1, Article 13(e.2) and (e.3)).
Is there still a separate licence for interjurisdictional transport?
Under the current regulations, the only qualifying document for interjurisdictional passenger and freight transport is the professional class C, D or E licence issued by bodies authorised by the National Road Safety Agency (Annex 1, Article 14(b), as worded by Decree 196/2025).
Does the physical licence card expire?
No. The licence is issued digitally; the physical card has no expiry date and is valid as long as the digital licence is (Annex 1, Article 13(b)). So it is the digital licence's validity you should track.
Can someone over 65 get a professional licence for the first time?
No. The Act does not allow a first professional licence for anyone over 65; on renewal, the authority assesses each case after a medical fitness exam (Act 24.449, Article 20).
