Never let a fleet vehicle's compulsory insurance lapse unnoticed
In Argentina every motor vehicle, trailer and semi-trailer, motorcycles included, must be covered by annual third-party liability insurance from an authorised insurer (Law 24.449, Article 68). To be driven, the vehicle must carry a valid insurance certificate, on paper or in digital form (Article 40(c)).
Argentina's Traffic Act 24.449 requires every motor vehicle, trailer and semi-trailer to be covered by insurance, under the conditions set by the insurance authority, covering any damage caused to third parties, whether carried in the vehicle or not; the obligation also applies to motorcycles, under the same conditions as for motor vehicles (Article 68).
This compulsory insurance is annual and may be taken out with any entity authorised to operate in the line, which must give the insured the certificate provided for in Article 40(c). Before it is taken out, the vehicle must have passed the mandatory technical inspection, or be in the regulatory safety condition if the inspection was not done in the previous year (Article 68).
To drive, it is essential to carry the valid insurance certificate, which may be shown on paper or digitally (Article 40(c)). The regulations instructed the National Insurance Superintendency to issue the rule under which insurers apply the technical inspection requirement, enforceable once the mandatory technical inspection system is operating in the jurisdiction where the vehicle is insured (Decree 779/95, Annex 1, Article 68).

Act 24.449 applies in federal jurisdiction, and provinces and municipalities may adhere to it (Article 1). The conditions of cover are set by the insurance authority (Article 68); this page does not detail them.
Who is responsible?
The insurance is taken out by whoever must keep the vehicle covered, with any entity authorised to operate in the line; the insurer must issue the certificate required by Article 40(c) (Act 24.449, Article 68). The driver must carry that valid certificate to drive (Article 40(c)). The National Insurance Superintendency issues the rule under which insurers check the mandatory technical inspection and, together with the National Road Safety Agency, decides when they may apply the variable premium system (Decree 779/95, Annex 1, Article 68).
If the deadline passes
Driving without valid compulsory insurance is a serious offence (Act 24.449, Article 77(f)), as is lacking required documents (Article 77(e)). To drive a motor vehicle it is essential to carry the valid insurance certificate (Article 40(c)).
Insurance and technical inspection go together
Before the insurance is taken out, the Act requires the vehicle to have passed the mandatory technical inspection or to be in the regulatory safety condition if the inspection was not done in the previous year (Act 24.449, Article 68). The regulations clarify that this requirement applies once the technical inspection system is operating in the jurisdiction where the vehicle is to be insured (Annex 1, Article 68). It pays to track both expiry dates.
