Keep track of your building's energy performance certificate

Türkiye's energy performance certificate (EKB) is valid for 10 years from issue and is renewed within one year of any work that changes the building's annual primary energy need (Energy Performance of Buildings Regulation, Article 25(2) and 25(7)). The owner keeps a copy; an EKB is needed to sell or let the property.

Under Türkiye's Regulation on Energy Performance of Buildings, the energy performance certificate (Enerji Kimlik Belgesi, EKB) is valid for 10 years from the date it is issued (Article 25(2)). It is prepared by an energy performance certificate expert using BEP-TR and covers the whole building (Articles 25(4), 25(8) and 25(13)).

If any work is done that changes the building's annual primary energy need, the certificate is renewed in line with the regulation within one year (Article 25(7)). An EKB is required for the purchase, sale and letting of buildings or independent units (Article 25(15)).

The energy performance certificate expert and the authorised issuing organisation are responsible for the information in the certificate and its accuracy (Article 25(4)).

Which buildings are exempt?

An EKB is not mandatory for structures classified for state security or national defence and the operational, training, security and defence buildings of the institutions listed in the regulation, for structures built without a permit under zoning law, or for buildings outside the adjacent area (mücavir alan) with a construction area under 1,000 m² (Article 25(9)).
