Keep your site's noise measurement from running out

Anyone in Argentina required to measure workplace noise under Law 19.587 must use the mandatory protocol of the Occupational Risks Superintendency (SRT), and the values recorded in it are valid for twelve months (SRT Resolution 85/2012, Articles 1 and 2). The measurement covers at least one typical work cycle.

The Superintendency of Occupational Risks (SRT) approved the Protocol for measuring the noise level in the workplace, mandatory for everyone who must measure noise under Law 19.587 on Occupational Health and Safety and its implementing rules (SRT Resolution 85/2012, Article 1). The noise measurement values recorded in that protocol are valid for twelve months (Article 2).

Equivalent continuous sound level measurements are taken with an integrating sound level meter or a dosimeter meeting at least the requirements for a Class or Type 2 instrument under IRAM 4074 and IEC 804; peak level is measured with a meter that has a peak detector (Annex, point 7). The measurement time must cover at least one typical work cycle, taking working hours and shifts into account (point 27).

The protocol identifies the site and its tax ID (CUIT), the instrument with make, model and serial number, its last laboratory calibration date, the measurement dates and times and the length of the working day; a copy of the calibration certificate and a plan or sketch of the measured points are attached (Annex, points 1 to 16). For each point it records the sector, workstation, exposure time, type of noise, peak level, equivalent continuous level or dose, and whether the maximum permitted level for the exposure time is met; it closes with conclusions and recommendations to bring noise into line with current law (points 23 to 42). The SRT publishes a practical guide (Article 3).

A national rule issued under Laws 19.587 and 24.557. It was published in the Official Gazette of 30 January 2012 and entered into force thirty working days after the day following publication (Art. 5). The SRT's Prevention Department may amend or update the Annex (Art. 4). The official list of amending rules shows no repeal.

Who is responsible?

Employers, workers and Occupational Risk Insurers (ART) must adopt the legally required measures to prevent occupational risks and comply with health and safety rules (Law 24.557, Art. 4, cited in the recitals of SRT Resolution 85/2012). The protocol is completed by whoever carries out the measurement, with the instrument and calibration details, and identifies the site by company name and CUIT (Annex, points 1 to 8).

If the deadline passes

After twelve months the measurement values are no longer valid (SRT Resolution 85/2012, Art. 2) and the site needs a new measurement under the protocol. The resolution sets no penalty of its own: breaches fall under the general occupational health and safety regime, which is not reproduced on this page. If the current measurement showed that the maximum permitted level is not met, the protocol's recommendations (Annex, point 42) should be followed.

Noise, lighting and earthing: each with its own date

The SRT set a twelve-month validity for the noise (SRT Resolution 85/2012), lighting (SRT Resolution 84/2012) and earthing (SRT Resolution 900/2015) protocols. If the measurements are taken on different dates, each protocol expires separately: record each one with its own measurement date and, if the study runs over more than one day, use the date shown on the protocol (Annex, point 9).

Tracking it with ExpirySuite

  1. Add each site or workplace and record the measurement date plus twelve months as its expiry; if you have several SRT protocols, create one record for each.
  2. Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before expiry and on the expiry day, leaving time to book the professional and a calibrated instrument.
  3. The technician or your health and safety service can upload the signed protocol and the calibration certificate through a secure link that is valid for 14 days and needs no account.
  4. Assign a responsible person, such as the health and safety officer; if a measurement expires, managers get further reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a noise measurement valid?
Workplace noise level values recorded in the SRT protocol are valid for twelve months (SRT Resolution 85/2012, Art. 2).
Is the SRT protocol mandatory?
Yes. The protocol approved as the Annex is mandatory for everyone who must measure the noise level under Law 19.587 and its implementing rules (Art. 1).
Which instrument must be used?
An integrating sound level meter or a dosimeter meeting at least the requirements for a Class or Type 2 instrument under IRAM 4074 and IEC 804; for peak level, a meter with a peak detector (Annex, point 7).
What must accompany the protocol?
A copy of the instrument's calibration certificate issued by a laboratory and a plan or sketch of the site with the measurement points, showing at least dimensions, sectors and workstations (Annex, points 15 and 16).
