Never let your establishment's RNE expire unnoticed

A food establishment's RNE registration granted by ANMAT/INAL through SIFeGA is valid for at most five years, or for the term of the lease or loan-for-use contract if shorter (ANMAT Disposition 1675/2014, Article 17). The holder must apply for renewal within the 60 days before expiry (Article 18).

Under the Argentine Food Code, food factories and food businesses must hold an authorisation from the competent health authority, and the holder must notify any relocation, extension or change of premises, owner, trade name, company contract or nature of activities (recitals of ANMAT Disposition 1675/2014). Disposition 1675/2014 implemented, at the National Food Institute (INAL), the registration of establishments covered by the Food Code in the National Register of Establishments (RNE) through the Federal Information System for Food Control Management, SIFeGA (Article 1).

RNE registrations granted by ANMAT through SIFeGA are valid for a maximum of five years and may be renewed. Where the establishment operates under a lease, loan-for-use or other contract that supports the right invoked, the registration lasts as long as that contract, up to five years (Article 17). Renewal must be requested within the sixty days before the expiry date (Article 18).

Once the documentary, formal and health requirements are met, the establishment is inspected within no more than thirty days before registration (Article 14). The certificate is digitally signed and carries a QR code (Article 15); the RNE number is unique, eight digits long, and its first two digits identify the health authority that grants it (Article 16). Information entered into SIFeGA counts as a sworn statement (Article 5). INAL's guide to RNE applications (version 10/2021) describes re-registration as a fee-based renewal and repeats the five-year term and the sixty-day window.

Disposition 1675/2014 governs RNEs granted by ANMAT/INAL through SIFeGA. RNEs granted by provincial health authorities are identified by the first two digits of the number (Art. 16) and follow each jurisdiction's own terms, which are not covered here.

Who is responsible?

The applicant who files through SIFeGA is responsible for the accuracy of the information, which counts as a sworn statement (ANMAT Disp. 1675/2014, Art. 5). To start a registration or update data it must enter all the required information in the system (Art. 6) and record the fee payment details (Art. 7). According to INAL's guide, re-registration is filed with the same documents as the initial registration, updating those that have expired.

If the deadline passes

Disposition 1675/2014 caps validity at five years and requires renewal to be requested within the sixty days before expiry (Arts. 17 and 18). INAL's guide also recalls that the RNE's term is limited by the lease or loan-for-use contract, which is why it recommends contracts of at least one year. Treat the end date of the premises contract as an additional expiry date for the registration.

The premises contract can shorten the term

When the establishment operates in rented premises or under a loan-for-use agreement, the RNE registration lasts as long as that contract, capped at five years (ANMAT Disp. 1675/2014, Art. 17). When you renew the lease, check the RNE expiry date and update it in the record if needed.
