Keep inspections and checks of your mobile cranes up to date
Self-propelled mobile cranes in Spain are inspected by an inspection body every three years up to six years of age, every two between six and ten, and yearly from ten or when the manufacture date is unproven (ITC MIE-AEM-4, Royal Decree 837/2003, section 6). The maintenance company also checks them every six months.
Self-propelled mobile cranes covered by the technical instruction ITC MIE-AEM-4 (Royal Decree 837/2003) are inspected periodically: every three years up to six years of age, every two years between six and ten years, and every year from ten years or if the date of manufacture cannot be proven (section 6). Age is counted from the date of the EC declaration of conformity or the date of manufacture shown in the declaration of suitability (section 4.3).
Inspections are carried out by an inspection body authorised to apply the Regulation on lifting and handling equipment, which checks the items in Annex IV. One copy of the report goes to the owner and another to the autonomous community where the company is registered. A green sticker is placed in the cab, under the inspection body's responsibility, showing the month and year by which the next inspection is due. All this is without prejudice to any inspections the crane needs as a vehicle (section 6).
In addition, the crane is checked according to the manufacturer and chapter 5 of standard UNE 58-508-78; maintenance and checks are the owner's responsibility and are carried out by maintenance companies. The maintenance company's checks take place at least every six months and the result is entered in the crane's logbook (sections 5.1, 5.2 and 5.14).
At a glance
| Age of the crane | Official inspection |
|---|---|
| Up to 6 years | Every 3 years (section 6.a) |
| Over 6 and up to 10 years | Every 2 years (section 6.b) |
| Over 10 years or no proven date of manufacture | Every year (section 6.c) |
| Maintenance company check | At least every 6 months (section 5.14) |
Age is counted from the date of the EC declaration of conformity or of manufacture (section 4.3). The green sticker in the cab shows "date of next inspection: before" month and year (section 6 and Annex VIII).
Who is responsible?
Maintenance and checks are the owner's responsibility (section 5.1). The owner or rental company keeps the crane's history available to the autonomous community and the inspection body, including official inspections, checks, repairs, modifications and accidents (section 7).
When a crane moves into a new age band
The interval gets shorter with age: after six years the inspection becomes every two years, and after ten years every year (section 6). Check the date of the EC declaration or of manufacture of each crane to know which interval applies.
