Keep your Spanish mobile crane operator licence valid
The Spanish mobile crane operator licence, issued by the regional authority and valid nationwide, lasts five years and is renewed for five-year periods on proof of the medical examination (Annex VII, section 6.2, of ITC MIE-AEM-4, Royal Decree 837/2003). Accredited certification, if used, must still be valid.
Erecting and operating mobile cranes covered by ITC MIE-AEM-4 (Royal Decree 837/2003) requires a mobile crane operator licence of a category equal to or higher than that matching the crane's rated load: category A covers up to and including 130 t and category B over 130 t (Annex VII, section 2). The licence is valid nationwide, regardless of the rules the operator must meet if they also drive the vehicle (section 8 of the ITC).
It is issued by the competent regional authority. Applicants must be adults, have the necessary knowledge and pass a medical examination of eyesight, sense of orientation, balance, hearing and psychological aptitude. Knowledge is shown by compulsory secondary education or equivalent plus a theory and practical course (300 hours for category A and 450 for B) and a regional exam; by a vocational qualification or professional certificate; by certification from an accredited body under UNE-EN ISO 17024; or by recognition of a qualification from another EU state (Annex VII, sections 3, 4 and 6.1).
The licence is valid for five years and can be renewed for five-year periods on proof of the requirement in section 3.3, the medical examination. If knowledge was shown through certification by an accredited body, that certification must be valid at renewal (Annex VII, section 6.2, as worded since 1 July 2024).

Who is responsible?
The operator must hold the licence to erect and operate the crane (section 8 of the ITC; Annex VII, section 2). The rental company's or owner's operator handles erection and operation; the user company chooses a suitable crane and appoints the person in charge of the lift, among other tasks (section 8).
If the deadline passes
Erecting and operating a mobile crane requires a licence of the right category (Annex VII, section 2), so it is best to renew before it expires.
If you were certified via route c)
Operators who showed their knowledge through certification by an accredited body (UNE-EN ISO 17024) need that certification to be valid when renewing the licence (Annex VII, section 6.2). Record the certification's date as a separate record.
