Track periodic medical checks and fitness certificates in Romania

Romanian employers must provide periodic medical checks after hiring, carried out by an occupational medicine doctor at regular intervals (Articles 13(j) and 25 of Law 319/2006); the law sets no number of months. The doctor completes the fitness-for-work certificate, kept with the individual training record.

Romanian employers may hire only people who, after a medical examination and, where applicable, psychological aptitude testing, are fit for the work they will do, and must provide periodic medical checks and, where applicable, periodic psychological checks after hiring (Article 13(j) of Law No. 319/2006 on occupational safety and health).

The measures that ensure appropriate health surveillance of workers, according to occupational safety and health risks, are set by the applicable regulations (Article 24). They must allow every worker to receive health surveillance at regular intervals, and workers' health surveillance is provided by occupational medicine doctors (Article 25). The act that regulates workers' health surveillance is Government Decision No. 355/2007, as amended by Government Decisions 37/2008, 1169/2011 and 1/2012.

The fitness-for-work certificate (fișa de aptitudine) is completed by the occupational medicine doctor. A copy of the latest certificate accompanies the individual training record kept by the head of the workplace, on paper or electronically (Article 81(4) of the Methodological Norms approved by Government Decision 1425/2006, as amended by Government Decision 259/2022). After an accident, the investigation file includes copies of the occupational risk factor identification sheet and of the fitness-for-work certificate (Article 122(1)(i) of the Norms).
