Never let a fire extinguisher in your company run past its maintenance date
Extinguishers in every workplace with a fire risk undergo inspection, control and preventive maintenance at least once a year, by the manufacturer or a technical service, recorded on the label (DS 594, Articles 45 and 51). The employer must ensure the workplace is not left without extinguishers during maintenance.
Supreme Decree 594 of 1999 of Chile's Ministry of Health sets the basic sanitary and environmental conditions every workplace must meet (Article 1). The company must keep in its workplaces the conditions needed to protect the lives and health of workers, whether its own employees or those of contractors (Article 3). Every workplace with any fire risk, due to the structure of the building or the nature of the work, must have fire extinguishers of the type suited to the combustible or flammable materials present or handled; their number depends on the area to be protected under Article 46, and they must meet the requirements of Supreme Decree 369 of 1996 of the Ministry of Economy, or the decree that replaces it, and be certified by an accredited laboratory (Article 45).
Extinguishers must undergo inspection, control and preventive maintenance under official Chilean standards, carried out by the manufacturer or a technical service in accordance with Decree 369 of 1996, at least once a year, with this recorded on the corresponding label, in order to verify their working condition. The employer is responsible for taking the measures needed so that workplaces are not left without extinguishers while maintenance is carried out (Article 51).
Extinguishers are placed in easily accessible, clearly identified locations, free of obstacles, in full working condition, at a maximum height of 1.30 metres measured from the floor to the base of the extinguisher, and properly signposted (Article 47). All staff must be instructed and trained in how to use them in an emergency (Article 48), and those kept outdoors go in a niche or cabinet that allows quick removal (Article 49). In addition, every workplace must implement fire-prevention measures, controlling combustible loads and heat sources and inspecting installations under a pre-established programme (Article 44).

Who is responsible?
The company is the party required to maintain the workplace's safety conditions (DS 594, Article 3), and the annual maintenance of extinguishers must be recorded on the label (Article 51). The employer is also responsible for ensuring the workplace is not left without extinguishers when they are removed for maintenance (Article 51). In practice the safety officer or the maintenance manager of each facility keeps the label dates of all units.
If the deadline passes
Compliance with DS 594 is monitored and enforced by the Health Services, in line with the rules and instructions of the Ministry of Health (Article 2), and breaches of the regulation are sanctioned by the Health Service of the territory after a summary proceeding under Book Ten of the Sanitary Code (Article 131). An extinguisher whose label shows overdue maintenance does not evidence the annual inspection required by Article 51.
Several extinguishers, several dates
Each extinguisher carries its own label recording the last maintenance (Article 51), so a site or building may have different dates side by side. It is worth recording each unit separately, or at least each group with the same service date, and scheduling maintenance so that the workplace is never left without cover (Article 51).
Tracking it with ExpirySuite
- Add each extinguisher or group of extinguishers at the facility and record as the expiry date the day one year after the last maintenance noted on the label.
- Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before expiry and on the expiry day, leaving time to book the technical service and arrange temporary replacements.
- The technical service or the maintenance manager can upload the certificate or a photo of the label through a secure link that is valid for 14 days and needs no account.
- Assign a responsible person, such as the safety officer or the head of maintenance; if a maintenance date is overdue, managers get further reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.
