Renew every vehicle's state registration before it expires

US vehicle registration is renewed with the state agency on the cycle it sets, with proof of liability insurance and any required inspection on file first; Texas registrations expire on the last day of the month on the sticker, and California sends a notice at least 60 days ahead (Vehicle Code section 1661).

A vehicle registered in the United States is registered with a state agency (DMV, county tax office or equivalent), and the state sets how long the registration runs, when it can be renewed and what has to be on file first, typically proof of liability insurance and, where the state requires one, a passing inspection or smog check.

Examples from official state pages: in California, the DMV must notify owners that renewal fees are due at least 60 days before the renewal date (Vehicle Code section 1661, per the DMV's Vehicle Industry Registration Procedures Manual, section 10.135); online renewal is open as soon as the notice arrives, and the renewal is not finalized until any required smog certification is on file. In Texas, the registration expires on the last day of the month shown on the sticker; the TxDMV describes renewal as annual and allows online renewal 90 days before expiry or up to 12 months after it, if no citation has been issued for an expired registration, and the expiry month does not change. In New York, the registration must be renewed before it expires, early renewal does not move the expiry date, online renewal is possible up to one year past expiry, and a registration expired for more than 1 year cannot be renewed: the vehicle must be registered again.

Because the state sends the renewal notice to the registered owner's address on file, fleets that move vehicles or offices should keep the address current (both California and New York say to update the address before renewing) and should track each plate's expiry date in their own system rather than rely on the notice alone.

Who is responsible?

The registered owner, which for a fleet is the company. The state mails the renewal notice to the address on record, so the company must keep that address current and renew on time; insurers in California and New York also report coverage to the DMV electronically, so a lapse in insurance can block or suspend the registration.

If the deadline passes

An expired registration cannot lawfully be used on the road. Late renewal is possible for a limited period in some states (for example up to 12 months in Texas if no citation has been issued, and up to one year in New York); after that the vehicle must be registered again from the start. Texas notes that a citation for an expired registration ends the online late-renewal option.

What the renewal depends on

In California, if the DMV does not receive proof of insurance for a vehicle, its registration is suspended, and the owner must notify the DMV before cancelling insurance. In Texas, renewal requires proof of current liability insurance and, for commercial vehicles in all counties and for emissions inspections in 17 listed counties, a passing inspection. In New York, a vehicle must be registered within 180 days of the effective date on the insurance ID card, and the liability coverage must remain in effect while the registration is valid even if the vehicle is not used. See the separate guides on state inspections and auto liability insurance.

Tracking it with ExpirySuite

  1. Add each vehicle and record its registration expiry date (for Texas, the last day of the month shown on the sticker), plus the state of registration.
  2. Reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the expiry date and on the day itself, which matches the 60-day notice period California requires and leaves time for any inspection or insurance update the renewal depends on.
  3. Link the registration to the vehicle's insurance and inspection records so a lapse in one does not block the other.
  4. Assign a responsible person (for example your fleet administrator) so the right person gets the reminder.
  5. If a date passes, managers get overdue reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.
  6. Upload the new registration card or sticker confirmation through a secure upload link, valid for 14 days; no account is needed.

Frequently asked questions

How often is US vehicle registration renewed?
Each state sets the cycle. The Texas DMV describes registration renewal as annual, with the registration expiring on the last day of the month shown on the sticker. Check the registration card or sticker for the expiry date in your state.
How early can we renew?
In California, as soon as the renewal notice arrives (the DMV must send it at least 60 days before the due date). In Texas, 90 days before expiry. In New York, early renewal is allowed and does not change the expiry date.
What if the registration has already expired?
Texas allows online renewal up to 12 months after expiry if no citation has been issued; New York allows online renewal up to one year after expiry and requires a new registration after that. Other states differ.
Why was the renewal refused even though we paid?
In California, the renewal is not finalized until the vehicle has its smog certification and any parking citations are cleared. In Texas, proof of current liability insurance and, where required, a passing inspection must be verified first.
