Recertify every pesticide applicator before the certification expires
A commercial or private applicator certification for restricted use pesticides expires five years after issuance unless the holder is recertified first; the certifying authority may set a shorter period (40 CFR 171.107(a)). Recertification is by approved examination or continuing education.
40 CFR Part 171 sets federal standards for the certification and recertification of applicators of restricted use pesticides. Certifications are issued by a certifying authority, meaning EPA or a State, Tribal or Federal agency with an EPA-approved certification plan (40 CFR 171.1(a) and 171.3).
Each commercial and private applicator certification expires five years after issuance unless the applicator is recertified, and a certifying authority may set a shorter certification period. For the certification to continue without interruption, the applicator must be recertified before the current certification expires (40 CFR 171.107(a)). A State certification plan may not set a certification period longer than five years (40 CFR 171.303(b)(4)(ii)).
Recertification is either by passing a written examination approved by the certifying authority, or by completing a continuing education program under the certifying authority's EPA-approved plan (40 CFR 171.107(b)).

If the deadline passes
It is unlawful to use a pesticide classified for restricted use other than in accordance with Part 171, and a person counts as a certified applicator only while the certification is currently valid in the pertinent jurisdiction (40 CFR 171.1(b)).
