Spanish B driving licence: validity and renewal

A Spanish category B driving licence is valid for ten years until the holder turns 65 and for five years from that age (Article 12.2 of Royal Decree 818/2009). Renewal is requested at the Provincial Traffic Office up to three months before expiry with a medical fitness report; an expired licence does not allow driving.

Under Spain's General Drivers Regulation (Royal Decree 818/2009), licences other than C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D and D+E, including category B, are valid for ten years until the holder turns 65 and for five years from that age (Article 12.2). The period may be shortened if, when the licence is granted or renewed, the holder is found to have an illness or impairment that may worsen (Article 12.3). Validity also depends on not losing all points and continuing to meet the requirements (Article 12.5 and 12.6).

The Provincial Traffic Office renews the licence at the holder's request, once the holder proves they still have the required physical and mental fitness. The application can be made up to three months in advance and the new period runs from the expiry date (Articles 13.1 and 14.1). It must include the ID or foreigner number, a recent photograph and a fitness report from an authorised driver medical centre (Annex III, letter B.1).

A B licence covers cars of up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver, with a trailer of up to 750 kg, or combinations of up to 4,250 kg on the terms of Article 4. Holders who also have a group 2 licence, such as C or D, renew their B licence when they renew that licence, for the periods that apply to it (Articles 13.1 and 45).

Who is responsible?

The licence holder applies for renewal and proves their fitness (Article 13.1). In a fleet, the company can track drivers' dates, but the application is personal.

If the deadline passes

An expired licence does not authorise its holder to drive, and using it leads to its immediate seizure by the authorities, who send it to the Provincial Traffic Office (Article 12.4). The holder of an expired licence can still apply for renewal with the same documents (Article 13.3).

The 65th birthday

Validity drops from ten to five years from age 65 (Article 12.2). When recording the licence of a driver close to that age, check the expiry date printed on the licence itself.

Tracking it with ExpirySuite

  1. Add each driver's licence with the expiry date printed on it.
  2. Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before and on the day itself. Renewal can be requested at most three months early, so the 60-day reminder falls within that window.
  3. The driver can upload the renewed licence through a secure link that is valid for 14 days and needs no account.
  4. Assign the driver or the fleet manager as responsible person; emails arrive in each recipient's language. If a date passes, managers get further reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.
