Renew the safety adviser's certificate on time
A German dangerous goods safety adviser's training certificate is valid for five years and is extended by five years after passing the chamber of commerce renewal exam, which must be taken before expiry (Sections 4, 6(4) GbV). Nobody may be appointed without a valid certificate (Section 3(3)).
As soon as a company takes part in the transport of dangerous goods and has duties as a participant under the German dangerous goods regulations for road, rail and inland waterways or for sea transport, it must appoint at least one dangerous goods safety adviser (Gefahrgutbeauftragter) in text form. If the business owner performs the role personally, no appointment is needed (Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser Regulation, GbV). Only someone holding a training certificate valid for the mode of transport concerned may be appointed or perform the role personally (Section 3(3)).
The training certificate is issued after an approved training course and a passed examination. It is valid for five years and can be extended by five years at a time if the holder passes a renewal examination (Section 4 GbV). This examination may be retaken any number of times, but only until the certificate expires (Section 6(4)). The chambers of industry and commerce (IHK) issue certificates and hold the examinations (Section 7(1)).
The safety adviser must ensure that the certificate is renewed in time and show it to the authority on request (Section 8(6)). The business owner ensures that the adviser already holds a valid certificate suited to the company's activities before being appointed (Section 9(2) no. 1).

Who is responsible?
The business owner appoints the safety adviser in text form and makes the adviser's name known to all staff in text form, for example on a notice board (Section 3(1) and (2) GbV). The owner ensures a valid certificate before the appointment (Section 9(2) no. 1). The adviser personally ensures the timely renewal (Section 8(6)).
If the deadline passes
Administrative offences include, among others, a business owner appointing a safety adviser without a valid training certificate, or performing the role personally without one, or failing to ensure that the adviser holds a valid certificate, and a safety adviser failing to show the certificate on request or in time (Section 10 no. 1(b) and (d), no. 3(e) GbV).
Tracking it with ExpirySuite
- Add the safety adviser as a person and enter the training certificate with its expiry date; if you have several advisers, add each one.
- Reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the date and on the day itself. This leaves time to pass the renewal exam before expiry.
- The adviser can upload the renewed certificate through a secure link that is valid for 14 days and needs no account.
- Assign a responsible person; emails arrive in each recipient's language. If a date passes, managers get further reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.
Frequently asked questions
- How long is the training certificate valid?
- Five years. After passing the renewal examination it is extended by another five years each time (Section 4 GbV).
- Can I take the renewal exam after the certificate has expired?
- The renewal examination may only be taken until the certificate expires, and may be retaken as often as needed until then (Section 6(4) GbV). No one may be appointed as safety adviser without a valid certificate (Section 3(3)).

- Yes. No appointment is then needed, but the owner must hold a valid certificate for the mode of transport concerned (Section 3(1) and (3) GbV).

- The chamber of industry and commerce (IHK). The exam is written and may be held fully or partly electronically; it is in German, or in English on request under certain conditions (Section 6(1) and (3), Section 7(1) GbV).
