Never miss a forklift operator's three-year evaluation

An employer must evaluate each powered industrial truck operator's performance at least once every three years, and sooner after unsafe operation, an accident, a new truck type or changed conditions (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)). The certification records the operator, the training and evaluation dates and the evaluator.

Under OSHA's powered industrial truck standard, the employer must ensure that each operator is competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely, as shown by completing the required training and evaluation (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(1)). The standard covers fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines.

An evaluation of each operator's performance must be conducted at least once every three years (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(iii)). Refresher training is also required earlier when, for example, the operator is seen operating unsafely, has an accident or near-miss, receives an evaluation showing unsafe operation, is assigned to a different type of truck, or a workplace condition changes (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(ii)).

For construction work, 29 CFR 1926.602(d) states that the operator training requirements are identical to those in 1910.178(l).

Tracking it with ExpirySuite

  1. Add each forklift operator and record the date their next performance evaluation is due (three years after the last one).
  2. Reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the due date and on the due date, so you can schedule the evaluator in time.
  3. Assign a responsible person (for example the site safety manager) for each operator so the right person gets the reminder.
  4. If a due date passes, managers get overdue reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later.
  5. Ask the trainer or the operator to upload the signed certification through a secure upload link, valid for 14 days; no account is needed.
