Never let the yearly PPE training refresher fall behind
The employer must run a training programme on the use and care of personal protective equipment of at least one clock hour, refreshed every year and whenever a worker joins the task or changes PPE type (DS 44 of 2024, Article 13). Each session is recorded with attendees, trainers and assessment results.
Supreme Decree 44 of 2024 of Chile's Ministry of Labour and Social Security, in force since 1 February 2025, regulates the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in its Article 13. The employer must provide, at its own cost, equipment suited to the risk, to be used only where the risk could not be avoided or sufficiently controlled by engineering, technical, organisational or administrative measures, and must have a procedure covering its use, maintenance, replacement and exchange (DS 44, Article 13).
The employer must also have a training programme on the use and care of PPE lasting at least one clock hour, which must be refreshed every year and whenever a new worker joins the relevant tasks or has to change the type of equipment used (Article 13). The minimum content covers the parts of the equipment, how to put it on, limitations of use, cleaning, storage and the daily check test; the employer may ask its insurance administrator for technical assistance (Article 13).
Each training activity must be recorded, stating at least the theoretical and practical activities, attendees, trainers, learning assessment results and refresher activities (Article 13). Supreme Decree 594 of 1999 of the Ministry of Health already requires the employer to provide the equipment free of charge together with the theoretical and practical training needed to use it correctly, and the worker to wear it while exposed (DS 594, Article 53); the equipment must meet the applicable quality certification rules or be registered with the Public Health Institute (DS 44, Article 13; DS 594, Article 54).

Article 13 sets one clock hour as the minimum length of the training programme but does not set a minimum length for the yearly refresher, nor the date from which the year runs. In practice, count twelve months from each worker's last training or refresher and keep the record with the five items the rule requires.
Who is responsible?
The employer must provide the equipment at its own cost, have the procedure for its use, maintenance and replacement, and run the training programme with yearly refreshers, recording each activity (DS 44, Article 13). It may ask its Law 16.744 insurance administrator for technical assistance with the training (Article 13). The worker must wear the equipment at all times while exposed to the risk (DS 594, Article 53).
If the deadline passes
Inspection, enforcement and sanctioning of breaches of DS 44 fall to the Regional Ministerial Health Secretariats and the Labour Directorate, according to their powers (DS 44, Article 77); breaches of DS 594 are sanctioned by the health authority after a formal inquiry, under Book Ten of the Health Code (DS 594, Article 131). Without a recorded yearly refresher, the employer cannot show inspectors that Article 13 has been met (DS 44, Articles 13 and 72).
Three triggers, not just the calendar
The refresher is not only yearly: it is also due whenever a new worker joins the tasks that require the equipment or when the type of protective equipment changes (DS 44, Article 13). Create each worker's entry on hiring and restart the period when the PPE changes. The general risk-prevention training of at least 8 hours (Article 16) is a separate duty, covered in its own guide.
Tracking it with ExpirySuite
- Add each worker who uses personal protective equipment and record as the expiry date the day one year after their last training or refresher.
- Email reminders arrive 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before expiry and on the expiry day, leaving time to schedule the refresher and coordinate it with the insurance administrator if needed.
- The trainer can upload the training record (attendees, assessments and refresher activities) through a secure link that is valid for 14 days and needs no account.
- Assign a responsible person, such as the safety officer; if the refresher is overdue, managers get further reminders 3, 7 and 14 days later. If a worker changes PPE type, update the date of the last training.
