How often is the federal driver licence renewed?

Every 4 years for categories A, B, C, D and F, and every 2 years for category E (Article Third of the SCT Agreement published in the DOF on 25 February 2016).

What do I need to renew it?

A written or online application, a valid medical fitness certificate, a valid training certificate and proof of fee payment; for category D, also a valid general tourist guide card; and, for in-person applications, proof of address no older than 3 months (Article Third).

Is a printed licence valid?

Yes. The printed version of the Federal Digital Licence has the same legal effect as the digital one and is valid for one month from printing; it can be downloaded again whenever needed (2022 SICT Agreement, Article 3).

Yes. Permit holders must check and confirm that the drivers of their vehicles hold a valid federal licence (Article 36 of the Federal Roads, Bridges and Motor Transport Law).

Mexico's federal driver licence in categories A, B, C, D and F is renewed every 4 years, and category E every 2, on proof of valid medical fitness and training certificates (SCT Agreement, DOF 25/02/2016, Article Third). Carriers check it stays valid; driving without one is fined (LCPAF, Articles 36 and 74).

Drivers of federal road transport vehicles in Mexico must obtain and, where applicable, renew the federal licence issued by the Ministry, and permit holders must check and confirm that their drivers hold a valid federal licence (Article 36 of the Federal Roads, Bridges and Motor Transport Law). Drivers of the vehicles referred to in Articles 40 and 44 of that law are exempt (Article 36).

Licences in categories A, B, C, D and F must be renewed every 4 years, and category E every 2 years. Renewal requires a valid medical fitness certificate (constancia de aptitud psicofísica), a valid training certificate and proof of payment of the fee; for category D, also a valid general tourist guide card (SCT Agreement published in the DOF on 25 February 2016, Article Third).

Category A covers federal passenger and tourist transport; B, freight, except double-articulated vehicles and hazardous materials and waste; C, two- or three-axle freight vehicles; D, tourism as a driver-guide; E, double-articulated tractor-trailers and specialised transport of hazardous materials and waste; and F, passengers to or from seaports and federal airports (Article First).

Today the licence is issued as a Federal Digital Licence, which shows its start and end dates of validity. It is shown in the mobile app or as a printed version with the same legal effect, valid for one month from printing (SICT Agreement published in the DOF on 1 April 2022, Articles 3 and 6).

Who is responsible?

The driver applies for renewal (2016 Agreement, Article Third) and must show the licence when the authorities ask, on a phone or as a valid printout (2022 Agreement, Article 14). The permit holder must check and confirm that its drivers hold a valid federal licence (Federal Roads, Bridges and Motor Transport Law, Article 36).

If the deadline passes

Drivers on roads and bridges must carry the valid licence required by the applicable rules (Federal Roads, Bridges and Motor Transport Law, Article 36). The law imposes fines for breaching federal motor transport, auxiliary services and private transport rules, and repeat offences can be fined up to double (Article 74(IV) and the paragraph on repeat offences).

Renewal depends on two other documents

To renew, the medical fitness certificate and the training certificate must be valid (2016 Agreement, Article Third). If either has expired, the driver cannot renew on time, so it is worth tracking them as well.
