Renew every employee's UAE residence visa on time

A standard UAE employment visa is valid for two years; the employer, as sponsor, applies for it and renews it with ICP together with the Emirates ID, with a passport valid for at least 6 months and valid health insurance (u.ae, ICP). After expiry ICP grants 30 to 180 days of grace by category, then a daily fine.

According to the UAE government portal u.ae, a foreigner can get a standard employment visa valid for two years and renewable under the terms set by the visa-issuing authorities, and the employer must apply for it. More generally, a sponsored residence visa can be valid for 1, 2 or 3 years depending on its type and the sponsor.

u.ae says the sponsor must renew the residence visa before it expires, to avoid fines or legal consequences. When the residence visa expires, the Emirates ID card issued by ICP expires too.

ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) renews residence permits together with an Emirates ID application, including work residence permits through government, private or free zone entities. All residence issuance requirements must still be met at renewal, and the passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

Who is responsible?

The sponsor. For a standard work visa that is the employer, which applies for the visa and renews it with ICP. Only the sponsor can normally cancel the visa; for an employment visa the company first applies to MOHRE to cancel the labour contract and work permit, then applies to ICP (u.ae).

If the deadline passes

ICP grants a grace period after a residence permit expires or is cancelled: 30, 60, 90 or 180 days depending on the category. From the day after the grace period ends, ICP charges a fine for each day of stay in the UAE. The Emirates ID also expires with the residence visa. Check the ICP service page for the current amounts.

Renewing early for travel

u.ae says that if a resident needs to renew the residence visa one to six months before it expires for travel reasons, special permission and approval from ICP are needed first.
